Alexandra Phillips is a coloratura soprano known for her sparkling high notes. She has been lauded for her vocal and theatrical versatility both on the operatic stage as well as in concert. Her repertoire ranges from music of the early baroque to opera and contemporary chamber music. Alexandra performed as a soloist throughout the United States and Europe including such prestigious venues as the White House, Kennedy Center, Folger Theatre, and Piccolo Spoleto.
In 2010, Alexandra performed "Songs for the New Millenium" with the Congressional Chorus and the Great Noise Ensemble at the Kennedy Center’s Terrace Theatre. She also performed the role of “Thais” in Massenet’s Thais with Amici Opera, in Poulenc’s “Gloria” with the Orlando Chorale, and was ‘Mabel’ in Orlando Ballet’s production of “Pirates of Penzance.” She performed Joseph Schwantner’s Sparrows with the Contemporary Music Ensemble in Knoxville, about which the Knox News Sentinel hailed, “I can’t imagine anyone singing this gentle, atmospheric piece with its glistening interior spaces more gorgeously than did soprano Alexandra Phillips.” She has been the soprano soloist for Handel’s Messiah, for which her performance was hailed by the Washington Post as “bright and agile, a natural to the music.”
Other roles she has performed include ‘Despina’ in Loudoun Lyric Opera’s inaugural production of Cosi Fan Tutte; ‘Amy March’ in Mark Adamo’s Little Women with Knoxville Opera; ‘Jenny Slade’ in Knoxville Opera’s production of Roman Fever during the 2005 Rossini Festival, and ‘Olympia’ in Les Contes d’Hoffmann with Shaker Mountain Opera.
In the DC area, Alexandra has appeared with the Washington Arts Club, the Great Noise Ensemble, Hemphill Fine Arts Gallery, and the Master Chorale of Washington. Other highlights include St. John's Passion by Bach, Mozart Requiem, St. matthew Passion by Bach, Christmas Oratorio by Saint-Saens, Miserere by Allegri, The Creation by Haydn, and the Coronation Mass by Mozart.
Alexandra is a native of Vienna, Virginia. She learned her love of music from listening to opera on the radio and began singing at the age of seven. Her debut was at age thriteen when she soloed at the Kennedy Center with the Paul Hill Chorale. She is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music and earned her M.M. in Vocal Performance from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
